Why you need to learn the new rules of driving

Today, savvy drivers use momentum instead of fuel to move their car.

 

While many people understand that driving efficiently saves fuel, very few understand the implications for how they must dramatically reduce their fuel consumption in order to maximize the effectiveness of their vehicle.  This should become our duty as a responsible driver and citizen since we all sip from the same limited geological fossil fuel reserve and once the reserve is empty, our cars will stop running.

 

The media has been disseminating thousands of articles giving tips on what to do to drive efficiently. This is not to suggest that you do not know how to drive, moving your car through your accelerator is still part of an overall rule. For some drivers, getting from point A to point B as fast as possible remains critically important even though  their undue acceleration followed by hard breaking to avoid hitting the car in front of them will not make them arrive much faster… or alive.

As our economy depends upon oil prices fixed by foreign oil providers, we are beginning to behave like adults and adapting to the rigors of reality by adopting a more efficient driving process. At the same time, new rules are emerging as the price of oil continues to sky rocket.

I am a retired aeronautical engineer. In the fall of 2004, my daughter who is a teacher in Atlanta, Georgia was complaining about the price of gasoline and I advised her to visit the US Department of Energy web site where she would learn about how to drive efficiently.  She tried to follow all the tips but her MPG did not increase.  While we were discussing this, I entered the phrase “efficient driving” on my Google search engine to see if there was anything easier I could recommend to her. The highest ranked listing for this phrase on Google was the State

of Michigan web site listing numerous common sense tips for Energy Efficient Driving. What was most interesting was that the link pointed to a single web page tips as follows. But something was missing!:

 

  1. Combine trips for shopping and errands; Avoid unnecessary trips.
  2. Use the telephone or e-mail to communicate.
  3. For short trips, walk or ride a bike.
  4. Join a carpool or use public transit to and from work or school;
  5. Don’t idle the car for more than one minute;
  6. Drive the speed limit, or below, for better mileage;
  7. Overdrive gears improve the fuel economy of your car during highway driving;
  8. Avoid sudden bursts of speed, tailgating and pumping the accelerator pedal.
  9. Gradual starts and stops result in less fuel use and less wear and tear;
  10. Out on the open highway, keep windows rolled up to reduce drag;
  11. Using a vehicle’s air conditioner on a hot summer day can decrease mileage;
  12. If it’s cool enough, use the flow-through ventilation on your car instead of the air conditioner;
  13. Travel during off-peak hours when possible; Take the shortest route with the best roads;
  14. Use the cruise control -- it can save fuel by maintaining a steady speed;
  15. Keep tires at the recommended air pressure;
  16. Keep your car engine properly tuned;
  17. Remove bicycle and ski racks when not in use;
  18. Excess weight uses more fuel. Remove unnecessary items from inside the vehicle, trunk or truck bed;
  19. Use the lowest octane gasoline recommended by the manufacturer;
  20. When buying a new car, make fuel efficiency a priority.
 

Then I decided to attempt to build an instrument showing her the momentum of her car as simply as possible because I did not want her to be diverted from the driving. The rest is history. A of today Moment-O-Meter is manufactured here in the USA and aimed to change vehicles fuel energy consumption forever. How cool is that?

 

The missing vehicle instrument is born
Three years of Research & Development provided me with the great satisfaction of having developed a patentable “inertial mass detector indicator device for vehicles” (patent pending) that I call “Moment-O-Meter” because people are already familiar with the term Speed-O-Meter showing their car’s speed. I believe they will have no problem to understand that Moment-O-Meter shows their car’s momentum, MOMENTUM IS A FREE INEXHAUSTIBLE ENERGY INCREASING MPG (GAS MILEAGE PER GALLON OF GAS) OR  FUEL EFFICIENCY WHEN DRIVING EFFICIENTLY.
 
After being satisfied with the prototypes’ performance, I decided to test it on my own car and other cars I would rent for the purpose of collecting more data. I discovered that Moment-O-Meter allowed me to outperform the results obtained by the US Department Of Energy National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, especially in city.
