Hypermiling: Pulse and Glide on Highway

How does it work? Pulse and glide works like this (let's say you want to average 65MPH): First accelerate smoothly (keeping the Moment-O-Meter's light on green**) to 70MPH, that's the PULSE Second coast in neutral to 55MPH, that's the GLIDE. Your average will be 65MPH. Pulse and glide is significantly more efficient than driving along maintaining a steady 65MPH. ** The green will give minimum fuel consumption during acceleration. Why does it work? The secret is in the GLIDE: While gliding, you get the maximum MPG because the engine will rotate only as if you were idling @800 to 1,100 RPM which is only a fraction of the RPM needed to run @ 65MPH. But gliding allows using the car's momentum instead of fuel and your car will still cover a significant distance without consuming more fuel than when idling.
